Reg Huston/ S.T.A.R. Scholarship for Performing Arts
This Fund has been established to provide financial assistance to students who have participated in the performing arts in high school and who will continue to participate, either as the primary course of study, or as a secondary pursuit, in their higher education.
The committee shall strive to award a $4,000 scholarship award based on financial need and a $1,000 scholarship award based on merit each year.
1. The scholarship recipient/s will be chosen based on the following:
• The applicant must be a graduating high school senior in Monterey County and must graduate with a 3.0 GPA or higher.
• The applicant must have either classes or extra curricular activities in the performing arts during high school.
• The applicant must have two letters of recommendation either from their school teachers, private teachers or community leaders.
• The applicant must write an essay of approximately 500 words as to their interest in the performing arts and in what way they see themselves active in the performing arts in their future.
• ALL applicants must submit and video example of their performance abilities. Videos should be no longer than 5 minutes but can be shorter. Students should not feel obliged to fill all 5 minutes but should just put their best foot forward. Videos can be started in the middle of a performance and are not required to be a complete work. They can submit any video. It can be made on a phone. It can be a video they make specifically or an excerpt from a public performance.
2. To claim the award:
• The student must show proof of enrollment in an institution of higher education. If the school is a community college then the award is $1000 ($500 for two years)*. If the students enrolls at a university, conservatory or four year institution, the award would be$4000.00. If the student transfers from a community college to a conservatory or 4 year institution, the award may be transferred with a ceiling of $4000.00 for the total scholarship.
• The student may be a part-time student so long as their classes or extracurricular activities include the arts. Regardless of whether the school is a community college, university, conservatory or vocational school, there must be proof that the student is involved in the performing arts. This may be shown either by a class schedule, a performance program which includes their name or a letter from the director or employer where the student is active.
• The student need not major in the arts. They must, however, show that they are involved in the arts, see paragraph above.
• There is no limitation as to where the student continues his/her/their education.
• Send the claim form provided by CFMC along with official proof of enrollment to the Community Foundation.
